Join an Environmental Volunteer Group
Community groups are planting seedlings, revegetating, weeding and restoring ecosystems across the country. Find a group and join in!
Since European settlement the Australian landscape has undergone significant change as a result of land clearance and other forms of degradation. Such disturbances are still happening today and even though we have designated protected areas, these continue to be subject to range of environmental issues such as erosion, weed invasion, and salinity.
A membership and involvement in a not-for-profit environmental volunteer group will help fund and support both the planting of local seedlings and restoration of ecosystems through such things as weeding and monitoring.
How to do it now!
Find a not-for-profit group in your community. Here's a start:
- Greening Australia (National)
- Landcare (National)
- Bush Heritage Australia (SA)
- Friends of Parks (National)
- Trees for Life (SA)
- Tree Project (VIC)
- The Understorey Network (TAS)
The City of Holdfast Bay also offer specialised training for Bushcare, you can call Council for more information.
Why this action is important?
Natural Resource Management (NRM) is the critical battleground for Australia over the next 50+ years. We face challenges ahead with a declining natural environment, dying river systems, salinity, soil acidification, invasive species and soil loss. In addition, and making this harder, are more severe weather patterns (climate change) such as higher temperatures and scarce yet heavy rainfall. So it's time to join up and help out those front line groups implementing appropriate NRM practices across the country. Working at the local level can also help raise awareness and contribute to global change. Even if our contribution feels small we, as a collective community, can make a difference.
