Environmental Volunteer Program
In the early 1990’s a small of group of coastal residents began restoring the coast line through revegetation and weed control. The dedicated group became known as the Holdfast Bay Dunecare Team and have know prompted an environmental volunteer program.
Although the Dunecare Team specialised in sand dune environments, the environmental volunteer program extends out to gullies and native gardens. With a growing volunteer base, we are seeing significant improvements in biodiversity throughout the City.
One of the projects that we are working on now is the restoration and interpretation of Barton Gully, located at Burnham Road Kingston Park. Two years ago the upper section of the gully was full of woody weeds, and compacted earth, it is has now transformed into an area of diverse native plants including trees, shrubs, grasses and groundcovers. Although there is still much work to be done in the gully, the volunteers effort has shown what can be done with some trowels, a bit of much, some native plants and a little hard work.
Other projects include coastal restoration works along Brighton to Seacliff, restoration works in Gilbertson Gully, Seacliff, sensitive bushcare work in Kingston Park Cliff Face, and native gardens. In addition there will be workshops throughout 2010 including plant Identification, bird watching, and sensitive bushcare.
